Dimboola student donates hair

August 24, 2021

Ten year old Lydia is a student at St Peters Lutheran School in Dimboola Victoria and had been growing her hair so it could then be donated to the Kids with Cancer, Wigs 4 Kids Campaign. After nearly two years of growing her hair in July 2021 Lydia had her hair cut and was able to send 37cm of it for the Wigs 4 Kids Campaign.

Along with the hair donation Lydia was also able to send $776 in cash. The money will be used to help relieve the financial burden from families that have a child being treated for a cancer diagnosis.

Lydia loved her thick beautiful hair and enjoyed styling it but decided to donate her hair after having first-hand experience of seeing another child who had cancer lose their hair.

Lydia felt slightly anxious when it can time to cut her hair, but when sitting in the hairdresser’s chair, she said she wanted it cut shorter so more hair could be donated, which meant she had an extra 2cm more of hair cut off that originally planned. Lydia now has short hair which she is enjoying, especially after the two years keeping it in good condition ready to be donated.

Lydia says I had a friend who had cancer and she had no hair or a wig to wear, I thought, I didn’t want another sick kid to have no hair or a wig to wear, as it feels nice to have hair on your head, so I decided to grow my hair and donate it, so it could go to a kid to have a wig until their hair grew back, while they got better.

Lydia’s mum says We are super proud of her thoughtfulness and kindness, she could have given up once her hair got too long for her to handle but she didn’t, she was determined to grow as much as she could.

Lydia’s donation has also inspired two other local girls to also grow and donate their hair.
