As reported previously, LEA made a submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) Review of Religious Educational Institutions and Anti-Discrimination Laws. In responding to a request made by the ALRC for further time, the report, initially due on 21 April 2023, will now be delivered to the Attorney General by 31 December 2023. The ALRC is considering more than 420 submissions and 40,000 survey responses received in response to its Consultation Paper on reform proposals. Thank you to those of you who participated in the ALRC survey.
The current Commonwealth provisions will therefore remain for the foreseeable future. A review into the Australian Human Rights Framework has also been announced.
LEA continues to work closely with the Office of the Bishop in responding to these critical issues for faith-based education. Please contact the LEA office if your school or early childhood service would like to know more about these issues and how the Lutheran church is responding.
