National Lutheran Schools week (NLSW) Date: 7 - 13 May 2012 Theme: First-last...upside-down...back-to-front...inside-out... Humility is one of the ten core values for living in community that is described in the values statement of A vision for learners and learning in Lutheran schools. In humility, as Jesus’ teachings show, juxtapositions abound: true greatness/lowliness, first/last, exalted/selflessness, power /weakness, the greatest/like a slave, leadership/service, up/ down, forward/reverse. Cultural mores and the way we want to act are turned on their head. Reversals of common human understandings take us out of glory land and into a “last of all” mentality. We are challenged to reverse long- standing ingrained human habits. An attitude of humility is inextricably linked to and a prerequisite for love and service. In National Lutheran Schools Week the spotlight shines on humility: what it looks like, what it sounds like, what it feels like, what it thinks like in the lived reality of both school and personal contexts.
